History of Unreal Engine

Unreal Engine is a game engine developed by Epic Games, whose history has progressed as follows

  1. Unreal Engine 1 (1998)The first Unreal Engine debuted in 1998. This engine was created for the development of a first person shooter (FPS) game named "Unreal. The engine had very advanced graphics and networking capabilities compared to other game engines of the time.
  2. Unreal Engine 2 (2002): UE2 is a significant improvement over the first generation and adds support for new consoles like the PlayStation 2 and Xbox. This engine release was used by Epic Games for the development of Unreal Tournament 2003.
  3. Unreal Engine 3 (2006)UE3: UE3 was released in 2006 and was the primary game development engine for over a decade. The engine supports DirectX 9/10 (and later 11) and a large number of AAA games were developed using it.
  4. Unreal Engine 4 (2014): UE4 was released in 2014. It featured significant improvements over previous versions, most notably a new rendering system to produce more detailed and realistic visuals. In addition, for the first time, UE4 introduced Blueprints, a visual scripting system that allows developers with little or no programming skills to quickly create game prototypes.
  5. Unreal Engine 5 (2021): UE5 features completely new graphics rendering technologies Nanite and Lumen. These technologies enable more detailed and photorealistic graphics, allowing game developers to add unprecedented levels of detail to their games.

During that time, the Unreal Engine has been widely used not only for games developed by Epic Games, but also for the development of numerous games and applications by other studios and developers. It is also increasingly being used in the film and television industry, architectural visualization, education, and virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). These fields can utilize the Unreal Engine for applications other than game development, especially in film production as a real-time visual effects and virtual production tool.
